Tutus and Fairys and Pink - Oh My! - Prima Princessa: Product Review & Giveaway

If you are the Parent or Grandparent of a little girl, you know that they are all about magic and dancing and sparkle and pink. Here at our house filled with three little girls, we are surrounded by such things constantly and although I want to do everything I can to encourage their love of beauty, imagination, and music, I am sometimes at a loss. Of course then, when I learned about the Prima Princessa DVD, I was excited to see what it had to offer.

Here is what I found:

Prima Princessa is a fun and happy way to introduce children to the world of ballet.

Description from the Creators: "This is a hip new twist on learning about ballet, featuring the Paris Opera Ballet and Students from School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center, Official Academy of New York City Ballet. Our 40 minute DVD is a cool, fun, beautiful show with a brain. Prima Princessa, an animated fairy ballerina, magically transports a group of little girls to see the Paris Opera Ballet performs select segments of Swan Lake. In between acts, the children return home to learn simple ballet steps which are playfully shown mixed into colorful montages of toys, animals, children and young dancers from the School of American Ballet."

The ladies who created this DVD are a pair of stay-at-home-moms who teamed up after their young daughters fell in love with ballet. Mary Kate Mellow and Stephanie Troeller wanted to allow their girls to watch live ballet performances but after finding nothing was available, they put their heads together and the Prima Princessa DVD is the result.

Here is what I did like:

When the DVD arrived, I told my girls I had something fun to watch with them. Once I put it in the player, they were completely enchanted. The 5 year old got up and danced along with the Preschool Ballerinas, wishing she too had their tutu's on. She thought it looked so fun that she wants to have a party just like that! The 6 year old, who is becoming more analytical, was all about the story. She was familiar with the storyline and could easily pick out what was happening to the Prince and the Swans. She would comment on the various ballerina's costumes and enjoyed watching both the Preschool Ballerinas and the Ballet company.

I was thrilled that they both enjoyed watching the DVD so much. They had both previously taken ballet lessons and this served as a perfect review of the basic positions. When watching something can encourage a love of the Arts in my children, I am all for it!

Here is what I didn't like:

Seriously, the only thing I did not like was when it was over, there was not another one to order! :(

Here is what I say:

If there is a little girl in your life, especially one who loves dancing, music, fairies and pink, I would not hesitate to order a copy of Prima Princessa for her.

Released in January of 2008, it retails for $19.99 and is available in specialty stores nationwide and on Amazon.com. In addition, there is a Prima Princessa website that features a clip of the show itself and coloring book pages for your ballerinas to enjoy. First of all, I love Swan Lake, so it has that going for it. :) And I think my twin girls would be much more excited to watch it because of all the little girls in the video. :)
